Fiesta Maya Caps Busy Week
Garden City (April 2, 2012) – It’s Spring Break week once again and parents are looking for things to do to keep kids entertained. The Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) has the answer with a fun filled week of workshops.
The highlight of the week is Fiesta Maya, a celebration of Mayan culture in honor of The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion exhibit on display at LICM.

Messy Afternoons
Thursday, April 5 – Friday, April 13 from 1-3 p.m. (Except April 7 and 8)
We’ll be up to our elbows in goop, guts, shaving cream and play-doh today … and we hope you’ll join us for the type of artistic activities that everyone loves, but not one likes to clean-up after. Except us! Space is limited and based on a first come, first serve basis. Sign up outside the Orange Studio. No other early childhood programs will take place.
Ages: 18 months to 4 years. Free with museum admission.

A Picnic of Pellets
Monday, April 9, Wednesday, April 11 and Friday, April 13 at 11a.m. and 2 p.m.
What do owls eat? How do they hunt? What do they use to ingest food? Inspired by our Feasts for Beasts gallery, we will explore the fascinating digestive process of owls and discover the answers to these questions. Watch a live dissection of owl pellets by an animal expert and examine your own!
Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM Members)

Coming from far away in Siberia, Russia, Crystal Trio is a unique musical group that performs using special glass instruments including the glass harp, verrophone and glass pan flute bass. The trio continues to develop the tradition of musical glass by playing well-known classical and popular modern works, as well as tunes specifically written for glass instruments. Come experience this one of a kind music.

Ancient Artifacts
Tuesday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
Archaeologists use their knowledge of science and history to study ancient peoples. In Central America, a city called Cuello was one of the earliest discoveries of Maya life dating as far back as the year 2500 B.C. Learn about the archaeological process as you go on a simulated dig, collect data and piece together a Maya “artifact”.
Ages: 5 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM Members)

Fiesta Maya

Join us as we celebrate the mystery and intrigue of the Maya empire in a unique and interesting way in honor of our visiting exhibit The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion. Discover the fascinating contributions made by the Maya civilization in math, science, art and history. Learn about the Maya people, culture and events through fun hands-on activities, food and storytelling. This event is made possible with the support of the New York Council for the Humanities.
All ages. Free with museum admission.
All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Museum admission: $11 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1 year old FREE. $10 seniors. Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply.
