CHILDREN’S MUSEUM CELEBRATES HOLIDAY SEASON WITH CULTURAL WORKSHOPS
Garden City – The holiday season is once again upon us and the Long Island Children’s Museum is celebrating with a series of themed workshops. Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza take center stage as visitors learn the history and traditions behind each of the holidays and then create a craft to take home to continue the celebration.
Festival of Lights!
Sunday, December 11 from 1-3 p.m.
Join LICM in celebrating Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights! Learn about the history and traditions of this festive holiday and why people light candles on a menorah. Make your own hand-painted wooden spool menorah to treasure year after year!
Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).
Trimming the Tree
Saturday, December 17 from 1-3 p.m.
Why do some families hang ornaments on a tree? For many people trimming the Christmas tree is a special tradition that goes back hundreds of years. Join us as we learn about why some families decorate a tree and Christmas ornaments from around the world. Experience some of these age old traditions and create a unique hand-painted glass ornament to treasure for years to come.
Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).
Celebrating Kwanzaa
Tuesday, December 27 from 1-3 p.m.
Do you like week-long celebrations? Kwanzaa is the time when many African American families get together to give thanks, and to enjoy the blessings of family. Join Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and LICM as we explore this unique holiday that celebrates African American culture. Get hands-on as we learn about the rich traditions and the meaning behind Kwanzaa then make your own Kinara to take home.
Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).
All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cooper and Me Book Signing December 11th at the Book Revue...
WHO: Thirteen- year-old student, Alexa Peters, co-author and illustrator of the children’s book series, Cooper and Me, and her mother and co-author, Monique Peters.
WHAT: Alexa and Monique will sign copies of Cooper and Me and Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure, the first two in a series of picture books about an adventurous Black Lab who takes kids on fun adventures as they learn important life lessons. Alexa will read to the audience accompanied by a special guest – Cooper, her loveable pet canine and inspiration for the books! The festive event will feature a Cooper and Me activity table, where budding authors and artists can create their own illustrated stories, and tummy-warming hot cocoa and holiday cookies for kids to nibble on while they enjoy the books’ catchy theme music. There’ll even be treats for guests’ four-legged friends!
WHERE: Book Revue
313 New York Avenue
Huntington, NY 11743
Tel: 631.271.1442
WHEN: Sunday, December 11
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
BACKGROUND: Cooper and Me books, aimed at children 4 – 7, are illustrated by Alexa Peters (now 13), and co-written with her mother, Monique Peters. The idea for the books came from Alexa's sketchbooks, in which she created stories since she was very little as a means of expressing her feelings about her daily experiences. The original Cooper and Me book tells the story of a young girl who is nervous as her first day of school approaches. The second book, Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure, is about two dog pals – Cooper and Bella – who go off on a sledding adventure and have a hard time finding their way home after a snowstorm. These engaging and wise stories captivate young learners while helping build emotional resilience. Interactive resources at the back of each book, and at www.cooperandme.com, provide further opportunity for parents to explore these topics with their kids.
The story behind Cooper and Me also offers an inspiring example of families working together to help others. A portion of the proceeds from the original Cooper and Me goes to the Happy Hearts Fund, which builds schools in disaster areas, and $1.00 from each Winter Adventure book sold will support The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation solely dedicated to finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.
