Press Release from AAP - No More Bumpers!

AAP EXPANDS GUIDELINES FOR INFANT SLEEP SAFETY AND SIDS RISK REDUCTION
EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 12:01 a.m. ET

BOSTON – Since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended all babies should be placed on
their backs to sleep in 1992, deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome have declined dramatically. But sleeprelated deaths from other causes, including suffocation, entrapment and asphyxia, have increased.
In an updated policy statement and technical report, the AAP is expanding its guidelines on safe sleep for
babies, with additional information for parents on creating a safe environment for their babies to sleep.
“We have tried to make it easier for parents and providers to understand the recommendations by providing
specific answers to common questions,” said Rachel Moon, MD, FAAP, chair of the AAP SIDS task force and
lead author of the new guidelines. “As a health care community, we need to do a better job translating what the
research identifies as ‘best practices’ into the day-to-day practice of caring for infants in both the hospital and
home environment.”
The policy statement, “SIDS and Other Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Expansion of Recommendations for a Safe
Infant Sleeping Environment,” and an accompanying technical report, will be released Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the
AAP National Conference & Exhibition in Boston and published in the November 2011 issue of Pediatrics
(published online Oct. 18).
Dr Moon will discuss the new recommendations during an embargoed news briefing for reporters at 11 a.m. ET
Monday, Oct. 17, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. During the news briefing, a crib with objects
such as crib bumpers, baby blankets, pillows and toys will be set up for Dr. Moon to demonstrate safe vs. unsafe
sleep practices.
The policy statement and technical report provide global recommendations for education and safety related to
SIDS risk reduction. In addition, the AAP is providing recommendations on a safe sleeping environment that
can reduce the risk of all sleep-related infant deaths, including SIDS. Three important additions to the
recommendations include:
 Breastfeeding is recommended and is associated with a reduced risk of SIDS.
 Infants should be immunized. Evidence suggests that immunization reduces the risk of SIDS by 50
percent.
 Bumper pads should not be used in cribs. There is no evidence that bumper pads prevent injuries, and
there is a potential risk of suffocation, strangulation or entrapment.
“It is important for health care professionals, staff in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units, and
child care providers to endorse the recommended ways to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related

trainees on how to prevent suffocation deaths and to reduce SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths – our
goal is to ultimately eliminate these deaths completely.”
The report also includes the following recommendations:
 Always place your baby on his or her back for every sleep time.
 Always use a firm sleep surface. Car seats and other sitting devices are not recommended for
routine sleep.
 The baby should sleep in the same room as the parents, but not in the same bed (room-sharing
without bed-sharing).
 Keep soft objects or loose bedding out of the crib. This includes pillows, blankets, and bumper
pads.
 Wedges and positioners should not be used.
 Pregnant woman should receive regular prenatal care.
 Don’t smoke during pregnancy or after birth.
 Breastfeeding is recommended.
 Offer a pacifier at nap time and bedtime.
 Avoid covering the infant’s head or overheating.
 Do not use home monitors or commercial devices marketed to reduce the risk of SIDS.
 Infants should receive all recommended vaccinations.
 Supervised, awake tummy time is recommended daily to facilitate development and minimize
the occurrence of positional plagiocephaly (flat heads).
Parent information will be available at www.healthychildren.org/safesleep starting Oct. 18.
Reporters attending the news briefing should first check in at the press room (151A) at the Boston Convention
Center. For a copy of the policy statement or technical report or to interview one of the authors, contact the
AAP Department of Communications.

You've been "Boo-ed"

It's that time of year again!!  Time for the kids to "Boo" their friends.  I love this idea!!  Two years ago my 5 year old son started this tradition with his friends and we will continue it this year.  It is such a cute idea.  You write a poem, attach it to a little bag of treats, leave a sign saying "Boo", ring and run.  Then that person that was Boo-ed (Ghosted) in some towns leaves that sign on their front door or front window and can't be Boo-ed or Ghosted again:) And must continue it on.  Sort of like a chain letter.

Here is the directions that should be printed out to go along with the treat bag and "Boo" sign & poem:

You have been “Boo-e’d”! Please keep it going by following these directions:
1. Enjoy your treat.
2. Place the BOO sign on your front door or visible in a window.
3. Within 2 days, make two treats, two copies of this note, & two BOO signs.
4. Secretly deliver to 2 friends without a BOO .
5. Keep an eye on nearby front doors to see how far and fast it spreads by Halloween!

Here is a pdf I found of the sign:
http://christmas.organizedhome.com/sites/christmas.organizedhome.com/files/printable/gift_tags_halloween_boo_sign_traditional.pdf

Here is the poem:

The air is cool, the season fall,
Soon Halloween will come to all ghosts and goblins, spooks galore &
Tricky witches at your door.
The spooks are after things to do,
In fact a spook brought this to you!!!
The treats that came with this short note,
Are yours to keep, enjoy them both.
The excitement comes when friends like you,
Will copy it & make it two,
We'll all have smiles upon our faces,
No one will know who "BOO"ed whose places!!
Just two short days to work your spell,
Keep it secret, hide it well.
Please join the fun, the seasons here.
Just spread these "BOO's"; Halloween cheer.

Here is a pdf of the poem & directions I found also:)

Starting today, eligible high schools are invited to submit videos about why their school deserves a grant atwww.GleeGiveANote.com. In December 2011, after two rounds of voting, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will name the 73 schools that will receive grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.

High school students everywhere are encouraged to harmonize, boogie or conduct their submission in video form – the more creative, the better. On October 4, eligible entries will be posted on www.GleeGiveANote.com and put up for public vote for 30 days. A panel composed of NAfME members will conduct a final vote and the 73 winning schools will be notified in December. Butera, executive director, National Association for Music Education. “Our organization is fighting every day to keep music in our schools so that every kid has the chance to experience it. With GLEE’s support of music education programs, millions of students won’t have to stop believing!”

“We are thrilled about the extraordinary success of Glee on DVD, as it is a true reflection of the fans appetite for this phenomenal series,” said Mary Daily, executive vice president for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “One dollar for every Blu-ray and DVD sold with a $1 million dollar guaranteed donation will go towards saving music and arts programs in public schools through the Glee Give a Note Project.”
